The tragic events unfolded on March 19 when Gregg fatally shot her mother, Ashlie Smylie, and wounded her stepfather, Heath Smylie. She was also charged with tampering with evidence after hiding a security camera following the shooting. The jury had the option to find Gregg not guilty because of insanity but ultimately convicted her on all counts, as reported by WAPT.
“Carly Gregg is evil. It’s not easy to say, but sometimes evil comes in young packages, and this is one of those cases. She’s going to prison for the rest of her life, and while it’s hard to say for a 15-year-old, that’s where she belongs,” said Bubba Bramlet, district attorney for Rankin and Madison counties.

Gregg’s attorney, Kevin Camp, asked the jury to consider the impact of the case on his client’s family and pleaded for a lighter sentence, warning that life in prison would only make things worse for those affected.
Gregg was emotional as the verdict was read, shedding tears in the courtroom. Her stepfather, Heath Smylie, and her grandparents were present during the verdict and appeared to offer words of encouragement to the teenager. In addition to the life sentence for her mother’s murder, Gregg received another life sentence for the attempted murder of her stepfather and an additional 10-year sentence for tampering with evidence. She will not be eligible for parole.
