Joey Bada$$ has been announced as the 2024 artist in residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
Confirmed by a report from Variety on Friday (September 27), Joey will be the first in the position to have “multiple touch points with the arts and education disciplines throughout the residency.” The rapper and actor will conduct masterclasses, lectures, conversations and Q&As throughout the year on the topics of music creation, songwriting, the business of music publishing, film and television and social impact.
In a statement to the outlet, Joey said: “I’m honored and humbled to be invited to be the Artist-In-Residence at Clive Davis Institute at NYU. I’m excited to share my experience and knowledge with the students and am certain that I will learn a lot from them as well. I am committed to building community across sectors and this is another beautiful step in that journey.”
Nicholas Sansano, Chair of the Clive Davis Institute, added: “We are thrilled to host Joey. In our opinion, the current economic model of the music industry does not fully allow for creatives to do one thing as a sole source of income and sustained relevance. Joey, the multi-hyphenate performer, songwriter, actor, and social advocate, can convey this all-too-real message to our students with first hand credibility.”
Sansano continued: “Of equal, or perhaps even greater importance, is his investment in the mentorship and holistic wellness of young developing professionals. He is a relatively young artist who is already making a lasting impact by prioritizing a very tangible commitment to the greater good – actions and messages our students need to see and hear.”
Sharing the news in an Instagram post, the 29-year-old added, “class is in session”
Joey Bada$$ won’t be the only entertainer on campus at NYU this school year, as Eve was also recently announced as the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
The year-long residency will begin on September 21 and will find the Philly native having “a series of meetings, classroom visits, and intimate conversations with students and faculty” about her career and the evolving music industry.
“Ya’ll, I can’t believe I am saying this but I am thrilled to announce I will be joining the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development,” Eve said in an announcement to social media.
“My year-long residency kicks off September 21 with a welcoming event at NYU. I want people to get an understanding of who I am as a person outside of music. I am looking forward to getting to know the NYU community.”
The announcement coincides with the release of Eve’s forthcoming memoir Who’s That Girl?, co-written by famed Hip Hop journalist and NYU adjunct professor, Kathy Iandoli, which arrived on September 17.
