The policy, which offers bonus points for students who skip bathroom breaks, was criticized after Sita shared the post on X(formerly Twitter). “My daughter’s math teacher awards academic extra credit to those who don’t use their once-a-week bathroom pass,” she explained. Sita added that her daughter didn’t like her plan to email the teacher and include the principal in the message, according to the New York Post. However, Sita did not disclose her daughter’s age or grade in her post.

Sita’s post caused further debate on social media as some educators found the practice cruel while others said they’d agree with the idea. “Some kids may have a medical condition, seems like this policy would be unfair to them,” one user wrote.

Other social media users shared their personal experience dealing with teachers who prohibited bathroom breaks while class in session. Some parents said they had to request medical accommodations at the beginning of each school year for their children to be excused for multiple bathroom breaks.

The incident has left social media divided, as it is unclear if Sita resolved the issue by contacting members of the school board regarding the teacher’s bathroom policy.
