Mom Refuses to Host Thanksgiving After Last Year's $500 Loss

A Mississippi woman says she decided not to host Thanksgiving this year because she spent over $500 to host guests last year. She said she was expecting another baby and decided to scale back on purchasing.

Tori Paschale explained to WOWT that she was only cooking Thanksgiving dinner for her husband and children since it would be easier for their budget. “You try to keep up with the tradition, but unless you’re doing a potluck, if you put it all on one person, it breaks the bank,” she added. Weeks before the holiday, she vented on TikTok about the financial strains that the holiday brings.

The video went viral on social media as thousands of viewers shared a similar sentiment. Pascale said it feels like you take away the holidays from your family when making financial decisions. However, she felt reassured that people agreed with her: “But seeing so many people agreeing made me realize it’s not just me.”

“How did we get to this point of trying to figure out if I can afford a sack of potatoes and some chicken? It feels like the goalpost keeps moving.”

The price of Thanksgiving dinner has reduced significantly lower than last year with a 16-pound turkey costing about $25.67, but it is still higher than pre-pandemic prices. Despite the financial constraints, Paschale is going to enjoy the holidays with her family. “Even if it’s not the mashed potatoes and green bean casserole type of situation, I’m just happy we get to experience it,” she said.
