Actress Kerry Washington just received. her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, celebrating her impressive film and television career.
During the ceremony, Kerry gave a heartfelt shoutout to her parents, crediting them for teaching her to dream big and go after what she wants. “Mom and dad, can you believe it? An actual star?” Washington said during her speech at the star-unveiling ceremony. The actress also expressed her gratitude to her fans and supporters, acknowledging that they were the ones who made Monday’s celebration possible.
“So many of you are part of how I got here. My prayer today is that my starlight continues to connect me to that light that shines each of you,” she said.
The Emmy-winning producer has racked up a long list of accomplishments throughout her 24 year career. A native of The Bronx, Washington has received high acclaim for her work in film, television, theater, digital media, advocacy, and beyond. The fearless multi-hyphenate is also a New York Times bestselling author, director, and organizer.
In September of 2023 Kerry released her debut memoir Thicker than Water, in which she shares the moving journey of her life so far and the bravely intimate story of discovering her truth. The book was received with high praise and remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for several weeks.
Washington is a lifelong advocate and activist, dedicated to using her voice to fight for justice for all communities. She was selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 2022 Women of The Year. The honor stems from Washington’s dedication to building democracy and advocating for social causes.
She founded the Vision Into Power Cohort, which supports grassroots organizations that empower marginalized groups. In 2022, Washington partnered with LAUSD and a coalition of industry leaders and actors, to launch The Roybal School of Film and Television Production, a magnet school aiming to drive transformational change across the entertainment industry for students from underserved communities.
