Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that the color “extend our perceptions” of the color brown: “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of browns—from being humble and grounded to aspirational and luxe.” Mocha Mousse is described as evoking the comfort and allure of cacao, chocolate, and coffee, CNN reported. The color follows 2024’s Peach Fuzz and 2023’s Viva Magenta.
The versatile color brown is set to dominate in 2025, likely influencing fashion trends and home interiors. Pantone stated in a follow-up that they have included five palettes to complement Mocha Mousse. “We created five unique colour palettes featuring PANTONE 17-1320 Mocha Mousse, each conveying its own distinctive feeling and mood,” the statement reads. These colors are Cannoli Cream, Cream Tan, Safari, Chanterelle, and Baltic Amber.

Social media users had mixed reactions to Pantone’s decision, as the neutral color was viewed as a reflection of the upcoming year.
One user wrote, “Totally into the Pantone color of the year for 2025. Mocha pairs perfectly with blush pink.” Another exclaimed, “It’s a solid neutral, peaceful and grounding. I think we might need some of this energy in the coming years.” Some commentators noted that the color has a greyish tint and expressed a preference for a darker brown. However, other users argued that the color has a calming effect and that people should appreciate neutral colors more.
“Idk. I kinda like it. It feels refreshing to me to have something a bit more muted and earthy, with that slight hint of a golden undertone to it. I sort of feel like the pushback is just about people’s distaste for brown shades, rather than finding the beauty in it.”
