President-elect Donald Trump is sharing another Day 1 plan, and this time he says he looks to end birthright citizenship, noting that American citizens with family illegally in U.S. could face deportation.
If Donald Trump’s Day 1 plans of mass deportation didn’t get you talking before, it is now as the president-elect now reveals he prepares to legally fight to end birthright citizenship in America!
In 1868, birthright citizenship was established in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” In order to make a constitutional amendment, Congress has to approve it and it also requires ratification by three-fourths of the states.
In an exclusive interview with NBC News’ ‘Meet The Press,’ Donald Trump told moderator Kristen Welker that he has no choice but to deport everyone who is illegally in the United States, including the move to mass deport American citizens born here. However, he did note that he’s also open to “working something out” with Democrats on a legislative way to keep Dreamers in the U.S. Dreamers are considered undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as very young children and have since grown up in America.
Trump said, “We have to do something about the Dreamers because these are people that have been brought here at a very young age. And many of these are middle-aged people now. They don’t even speak the language of their country. And yes, we’re going to do something about the Dreamers. They’ve become successful. They have great jobs. In some cases, they have small businesses. Some cases, they might have large businesses. And we’re going to have to do something with them.”
He said that although Democrats have “made it very, very difficult to do anything,” he does want Dreamers to be able to stay in the country. He also slammed President Joe Biden and said he should have “done something” on Dreamers during the past four years, boasting, “Republicans are very open to Dreamers.”
As for Donald Trump’s Day 1 plan to end birthright citizenship, leaving American citizens born to illegal immigrants at risk of deportation, he said, “I think you have to do it. It’s a hard – it’s a very tough thing to do. But you have to have rules, regulations, laws. They came in illegally. You know the people that have been treated very unfairly are the people that have been in line for ten years to come into the country. And we’re going to make it very easy for people to come in in terms of they have to pass the test.”
Trump added, “They have to be able to tell you what the Statue of Liberty is. They have to tell you a little bit about our country. They have to love our country. They can’t come out of prisons. We have to get the criminals out of our country… But we’re starting with the criminals, and we got to do it. And then we’re starting with others, and we’re going to see how it goes.” When asked, “Who are the others?,” Trump responded, “Others are other people outside of criminals.”
When asked how would he end birthright citizenship in America, Donald Trump said, “If we can, through executive action.” He added, “I was going to do it through executive action but then we had to fix Covid first, to be honest with you. We have to end it. It’s ridiculous.”
