The person taken in for questioning over the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified—his name is Luigi Mangione, according to NBC News.
As we previously shared, Luigi Mangione was arrested after a tip came in that a person of interest was spotted at a McDonald’s. The hunt for the suspected shooter then went national when NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the suspect had fled the city.
The Times also reported that the man in custody presented the same fake ID used to rent the NYC hostel room where the murder suspect is believed to have stayed before last week’s killing. Law enforcement sources also say he had a gun—likely a “ghost gun”—along with a silencer.
Mangione, one of six siblings, finished at the top of his class as valedictorian at the Gilman School in Baltimore, where he also played soccer, according to the New York Post. After high school, he expressed plans to pursue a degree in artificial intelligence at the University of Pennsylvania.
Social media profiles linked to Mangione suggest that he held anti-capitalist views, frequently sharing quotes from Ted Kaczynski, the infamous “Unabomber,” who criticized the medical industry.

According to law enforcement sources cited by the New York Post, Mangione followed anti-capitalist and climate change movements online and expressed strong criticism of the U.S. healthcare system.
When he was arrested on Monday, Mangione was reportedly carrying a “manifesto,” law enforcement officials revealed to the New York Times.
Since Wednesday, police have been searching for the individual responsible for the shooting death of 50-year-old Thompson, who was killed while on his way to an investors’ meeting at the New York Hilton in Manhattan.
The victim, an executive, was rushed six blocks to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was pronounced dead just as the conference began at 8 a.m.
