Redden initially faced seven charges but pleaded guilty to all except one: a charge of attempted murder of a victim aged 60 or older. He pleaded not guilty to this charge due to insanity, as reported by KNTV. The incident took place during a sentencing hearing overseen by Judge Mary Kay Holtus, who was set to sentence Redden for attempted battery charges. He was caught on video jumping over the bench toward her just as she delivered her ruling.
The assault reportedly left the judge with bruises, and for the attempted battery charges that triggered the incident, Redden received a separate sentence of at least 19 months. His outburst in the courtroom added to the charges he faced. Before sentencing, Redden addressed the court and said, “I’m not a bad guy, not an evil person. I don’t understand why my character is being attacked.”

He added that his intentions were not to kill Hotlhus. In September, Judge Holthus tearfully explained her thought process during the attack and said she feared for her life. Despite the attack, she did not receive medical attention and returned to her duties.
