Stanley is recalling 2.6 million of its popular Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs due to a defect that’s led to burn injuries, as reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The reason for the recall is due to the mug’s lid threads shrinking “when exposed to heat and torque,” which causes “the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the CPSC announced on Thursday. In order to fix the situation, CPSC is suggesting consumers “immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and contact Stanley to receive a free replacement lid, including shipping.”

Stanley also announced the recall on their social media accounts stating, “We are voluntarily recalling the Switchback [12 oz and 16 oz] and Trigger Action [12 oz, 16 oz and 20 oz] Travel Mugs in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). We ask that all customers in possession of either product immediately stop use and reach out to Stanley 1913 for a free replacement lid. At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.”
So far, the company has logged 91 reports globally, with 16 of those coming from the U.S., about the lids detaching while folks are using the mugs. This issue has resulted in 38 reported injuries worldwide, including two burn incidents in the U.S., according to the CPSC.

Of those 38 burn injuries, 11 required medical attention, the agency noted.
The mugs were available for purchase at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and more, both in-store and online, from June 2016 through December 2024, typically priced between $20 and $50, depending on the model.
These travel mugs were manufactured in China, as stated by the CPSC.
