According to USA TODAY, Luigi Mangione’s mother Kathleen Mangione reportedly knew he was capable of extreme actions, like fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. She reportedly suggested that his recent state of mind was questionable while being interrogated by police just days before his arrest for Thompson’s murder.

Earlier today (Tuesday, December 17), Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg held a press conference where he announced that UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s shooting suspect Luigi Mangione, 26, was being indicted in New York on first-degree murder charges. Bragg charged him with murder as an act of terrorism, claiming Thompson’s early morning murder “was a killing that was intended to evoke terror. And we’ve seen that reaction.”

During a press conference, New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny also revealed some of the tips that investigators received and steps that officers took to vet them. Before Mangione’s arrest, the NYPD officers embedded within an FBI task force received an important tip from a sergeant at the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) related to a missing-person case.

As we previously shared, before the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione’s mother reported him missing on November 18, last seen in San Francisco. After the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson in New York City on December 4, the NYPD/FBI task force contacted Mangione’s mother with updates on her missing persons report, claiming the suspect in the CEO shooting bore some resemblance to her son.

While vetting the missing persons tip from the SFPD sergeant, the NYPD/FBI task force called the suspect’s mother, Kathleen Mangione, to learn more about her son. During the call, the mother of the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting suspect reportedly did not seem surprised about him possibly being the suspect and going to such extreme alleged actions. Chief Kenny said that investigators and Kathleen Mangione “had a conversation where she didn’t indicate that it was her son Luigi Mangione in the photograph, but she said it might be something that she could see him doing.”

According to TMZ, law enforcement sources told them that the suspect’s mother indicated that she knew her son was indeed angry at the healthcare industry in America and that he might have been capable of going off the deep end to commit a crime. Sources claimed Kathleen Mangione possibly knew about her son Luigi Mangione’s alleged manifesto and that he verbally expressed his gripes with the healthcare industry before the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
