U.S. Senator (I-VT) Bernie Sanders is blasting Amazon founder and executive chairman (former CEO) Jeff Bezos after he attended dinner with Donald Trump as Amazon workers go on strike at seven facilities in California, Georgia, Illinois, and New York.
On Thursday (December 19), Bernie Sanders took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, telling him to get his priorities straight after he and his partner Lauren Sanchez had a double date with Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Wednesday evening (December 18).
In addition to calling out Jeff Bezos’ dinner with Donald Trump and his apparent misplaced priorities, Bernie Sanders also sent a clear message to Amazon, urging them to follow the laws and negotiate a fair contract with international labor union Teamsters, after they reported that workers at 7 Amazon facilities (in California, Georgia, Illinois, and New York) went on strike as of Thursday. The strikes arrived after Amazon ignored the union’s Sunday deadline for contract negotiations.
Before calling out Jeff Bezos over his Amazon workers going on strike, Bernie Sanders reposted a message from Teamsters, which read, “BREAKING: The Teamsters Union has launched the largest strike against Amazon in U.S. history. Amazon has forced this strike by refusing to follow the law and bargain with the thousands of Amazon workers who organized with the Teamsters. Now, Amazon Teamsters at facilities across the country will be striking, including primary picket lines at hundreds of Amazon Fulfillment Centers nationwide.”
In Bernie Sanders’ repost, he added a message that read, “While Mr. Bezos – the 2nd wealthiest person in the world – is dining with President Trump & engaging in illegal union busting, Amazon workers are on strike, fighting for decent wages and working conditions. Amazon: Obey the law. Negotiate a fair contract with the Teamsters.”
Now, Bernie Sanders’ post on Thursday wasn’t his first to call out Amazon founder and executive chairman (former CEO) Jeff Bezos over the work conditions and treatment of his Amazon workers. On December 14, he wrote, “Amazon’s Jeff Bezos has more money than could be spent in a million lifetimes. Why then does his company force workers to meet impossible quotas and treat them as disposable when they are injured? To Amazon, long-term pain and disability is just the cost of doing business.”
In a second post on December 14, Sanders added, “Amazon delivery drivers and warehouse workers deserve decent wages, benefits, and working conditions – and the right to form a union. I strongly support the thousands of Amazon workers who will go on strike tomorrow if Amazon doesn’t end its illegal union busting.”
Then on December 16, he wrote, “It’s beyond unacceptable that Amazon, the 2nd largest corporation in America, owned by Jeff Bezos, the 2nd wealthiest person on Earth, continues to put their huge profits ahead of the health & safety of their workers. Sadly, that’s precisely what my 160-page report today found.”
