Fani Willis Files Appeal • Hollywood Unlocked

Fulton County DA Fani Willis made a new move on Wednesday by reaching out to the Georgia Supreme Court to challenge her disqualification from the election interference case involving Donald Trump and others.

Last month, the Georgia Court of Appeals pulled Willis from the prosecution, citing a “significant appearance of impropriety.” Now, the ball’s in the court of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia to figure out who’s gonna step in and if the case is still on the table.

In her filing on Wednesday, Willis contended that the appeals court made a mistake by disqualifying her based solely on the perceived conflict of interest related to her connection with another prosecutor involved in the case. “No Georgia court has ever disqualified a district attorney for the mere appearance of impropriety without the existence of an actual conflict of interest,” the filing read.

The filing also asserted that the lower court’s ruling was an “overreach” and set a “new standard for disqualification” that it wasn’t authorized to create.

“The opinion ignored precedent and created a new, mechanical standard for disqualification uniquely applicable to public prosecutors, usurping authority properly reserved to this Court while ensuring confusion and uncertainty to follow,” the filing stated.

Last year, Trump and 18 others entered not guilty pleas to all charges in a major racketeering indictment, accused of trying to flip the 2020 election results in Georgia. Four of the defendants later struck plea deals, agreeing to testify against their co-defendants.

Right now, the case is on hold as Trump and his crew challenge Willis’ disqualification.
