President Joe Biden is gearing up to give his farewell address to the nation this Wednesday from the Oval Office, just five days before President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office.
He’s set to go live at 8 p.m. Eastern, and this is his last big chance to connect with folks at home and around the globe before he hands over the keys at noon on January 20th. This will follow his speech on Monday at the State Department, where he’s gonna reflect on his foreign policy legacy.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre filled reporters in earlier on Friday, saying that Biden plans to look back on his “50-plus years as a public servant.”
“He has some thoughts on the future, not just of the country, but how this country moves forward as a leader, when you think about global events, important global issues, and certainly he will lay that out,” she said.
In farewell addresses, presidents usually highlight their proudest wins, send good vibes to the incoming team, and share their thoughts on where the country stands.
Four years back, Trump went the pre-recorded route with his farewell speech. He offered “our best wishes” to the incoming Biden administration and emphasized that the nation would “pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous.”
Former President Barack Obama, in his 2017 address, touched on the health of our democracy, reminding everyone that “our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted.”
