It’s been heartbreak after heartbreak for some Californians who are dealing with the tragic fires firsthand. However, one person experienced a little feeling of relief after reuniting with his beloved dog. NBC News’ Liz Kreutz captured the heartwarming moment when a man was reunited with his missing rescue dog, Oreo.
Casey Colvin’s dog went missing after the Palisades Fire spread rapidly through his Palisades neighborhood. According to the news outlet, Colvin was at work when he was ordered to evacuate his home, then spent hours in traffic desperately trying to save his dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika.
When Colvin was unable to reach home, a firefighter offered to search for his dogs, but unfortunately, the firefighter was only able to save little Tika. As for Oreo, the pup ran off into the neighborhood. Adding to the heartbreak, Colvin’s learned that his house burned down, causing him to fear the worst.
“I literally rescued them off the streets, they deserve better than this,” a tearful Colvin told the reporter while sitting in standstill traffic. “How do I get to my house?”

However, there was a sign of hope. Thanks to the flyers he had put up, Colvin learned that Oreo had been spotted twice, and in one instance was “seen sleeping in the rubble of a neighbor’s home.” While returning to what remained of his home with a professional dog trapper, Colvin finally found Oreo hiding nearby in debris. Using squeaky dog toys to get his attention, his beloved pet ran to him down his neighbor’s driveway, where they had a tearful reunion.
The sweet moment was captured by NBC, who have been following his story.
After nearly a week since the fires started tearing through Los Angeles County, the Palisades and Eaton fires remained out of control Monday morning.
