Amid the deadly Los Angeles County fires still blazing, California Governor Gavin Newsom announces his “Marshall Plan” to reimagine “L.A. 2.0,” just ahead of the upcoming World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics to be hosted in Los Angeles.
Since the Palisades Fire broke out in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu on January 7, at least 6 other wildfires erupted across Los Angeles County. Following the Palisades Fire were the Eaton Fire near Altadena and Pasadena; the Hurst Fire near Sylmar and Santa Clarita; the Lidia Fire in Acton and around Soledad Canyon Road; the Woodley Fire near Woodley and Sepulveda Basin; the Sunset Fire near Runyon Canyon and the Hollywood Hills; and the Kenneth Fire burning in West Hills.
The latter notably threatened homes near Calabasas and Hidden Hills. Other smaller fires were later reported near Studio City and Pacoima. As of Saturday night (January 11), the Lidia Fire, Archer Fire, Woodley Fire, and Sunset Fire were all 100% contained after collectively scorching 487 acres and as of Sunday morning (January 12), the Kenneth Fire was 100% contained after burning through more than 1,052 acres.
As of Monday morning (January 13), the Palisades Fire was 14% contained, scorching 23,713 acres, the Eaton Fire was 33% contained, burning over 14,117 acres, and the Hurst Fire was 95% contained, burning 799 acres, according to CAL FIRE. Additionally, there have been at least 29 deaths and two dozen missing people reported, and nearly 50,000 customers without power in L.A. County.
During a Sunday (January 13) ‘Meet The Press‘ interview about the ongoing deadly Los Angeles County fires, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his “Marshall Plan” to reimagine “L.A. 2.0” ahead of the upcoming World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics to be hosted in L.A. Los Angeles is expected to host the FIFA World Cup in June-July 2026, Super Bowl LXI (61) in February 2027, and the Summer Olympics in July 2028.
He also spoke about a few full-sized executive orders he put in place, like a moratorium against insurance companies who cancelled homeowners insurance ahead of the fires, making sure residents are getting property inspections and disaster assistance applications promptly processed, and moves to combat fraud, price gouging, unnecessary and unethical taxing, abuse by developers, and more.
NBC News Correspondent Jacob Soboroff asked Newsom, “With this new rebuilding effort needing to take place, is L.A. going to be ready for all of these global events?” Newsom replied, “My humble position, and it’s not just being naively optimistic, that only reinforces the imperative moving quickly, doing in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, to his credit, was helpful in getting the Olympics to the United States of America, to get it down here in L.A. We thank him for that.”
Newsom continued, “This is an opportunity for him to shine, for this country to shine, and for California and this community to shine. The opportunity with all of that, all that opportunity and that pride and spirit that comes from not just hosting those three iconic games and venues, but also the opportunity, I think, to rebuild at the same time. And that’s why we’re already organizing a ‘Marshall Plan.’ We already have a team looking and reimagining ‘L.A. 2.0.’ and we’re making sure everyone’s included, not just the folks on the coast, people here [in Altadena/Pasadena] that were ravaged by this disaster.”
When further asked about his “Marshall Plan” to reimagine “L.A. 2.0,” just ahead of the upcoming World Cup, Super Bowl, and Olympics to be hosted in Los Angeles, Newsom replied, “[It’s] for this region. We’re just starting to lay out — I mean, we’re still fighting these fires, but we’re already talking to city leaders. We’re already talking to civic leaders. We’re already talking to business leaders and nonprofits. We’re talking to labor leaders.”
Newsom continued, “We’re starting to organize how we can put together a collection of individuals on philanthropy for recovery, how we can organize the region, how we can make sure that we are seeking federal assistance for the Olympics, more broadly, but also federal assistance for the recovery efforts, how we can galvanize the community with folks that love this community, and to really develop a mindset so that at scale we’re dealing with the scope of this tragedy and responding to it at scale with efficiency — like the executive order I talked about — time, value of delivering projects, addressing building codes, addressing permitting issues, and moving forward to rebuilding and being more resilient.”
