JAY-Z and his lawyer, Alex Spiro, are accusing Houston, Texas attorney Tony Buzbee of failing to meet with his accuser, Jane Doe, and properly investigate her claims before filing a rape lawsuit.

According to popular legal journalist Meghann Cuniff, JAY-Z, born Shawn Carter, and his lawyer Alex Spiro have filed new documents accusing his accuser’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, of failing to meet with her and properly interview her and investigate her claims before signing and officially filing the rape lawsuit against the rap mogul. Cuniff reports that Buzbee admitted to having two other attorneys at his firm do the legwork.
In Spiro’s latest filing, it reads, “A principled attorney, when confronted with factual inconsistencies that cast grave doubt on horrific allegations and reveal the inadequacy of any pre-filing inquiry, would reconsider the lawsuit. Instead, Plaintiff’s lead attorney Anthony Buzbee tried to gloss over them. Initially, he deflected, saying Plaintiff’s ‘case was referred to [his] firm by another, who vetted it prior to sending it’ to him, and that his firm would ‘continue to vet her claims and collect corroborating data.’”
Spiro’s filing continued, “Now, he concedes that he did not even meet with Plaintiff before signing his name to the complaint and fails to identify any evidence that corroborates anything his client alleged. Meanwhile, he has litigated this matter for three months without seeking admission to this Court or explaining this failure, including throughout earlier cases he filed in this Court.”
Spiro also claimed, “Mr. Buzbee’s studied detachment from the mandatory diligence and admission procedures contrasts starkly with his exertions outside of court. There is no denying that he has—in press conferences, social media, and media interviews—systematically weaponized the allegations of his still-anonymous Plaintiff to damage Mr. Carter’s reputation. Mr. Buzbee is conducting himself as he is knowing that his in-court submissions may be cloaked in immunity.”
Spiro’s filing concluded, “Mr. Carter seeks only to hold Mr. Buzbee to the ethical standards that constrain any responsible attorney who would solemnly sign his name to allegations in court. Without such guardrails on litigation, there is obvious, worrisome risk: Someone in Mr. Buzbee’s position could level reputation-destroying allegations indiscriminately in court, with an eye towards leveraging them in sensationalist fashion outside of court, without ever properly inquiring into their truth or facing accountability.”
As we previously shared, in early December, JAY-Z was named in an amended civil lawsuit alleging rape against Diddy, born Sean Combs. The woman first filed her lawsuit with Houston attorney Tony Buzbee in October and then amended her filing to reveal the name of one of two celebrities previously unnamed in her case. She alleged that when she was 13 the two moguls raped her at Diddy’s MTV VMAs after party in 2000.
Immediately after the lawsuit broke headlines, JAY-Z released a statement via his Roc Nation social media pages. He denied the claims and attacked Buzbee, calling him an ambulance chaser. The next day, JAY-Z and his attorney, Alex Spiro, took legal action against the unnamed woman and her lawyer. The mudslinging has continued with back-and-forth petitions in court and posts on social media.
