Speaking with Drew Barrymore, Halle Berry slams critics claiming she can’t keep a man and recalls playing the “Blame Game” with her boyfriend after her doctor misdiagnosed her with a “really bad case of herpes.”
During a recent episode of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show,’ Halle Berry opened up about her experience with perimenopause/menopause. Berry also shares how her own health journey inspired her to advocate for the health of other women. This includes Berry founding her own perimenopause and menopausal health company RESPIN.
Barrymore reveals to the studio audience that she and Berry have one other thing in common besides being women in Hollywood. She says they are both perimenopausal, meaning they are about to enter menopause.

Introducing the topic, Barrymore asks Berry about the moment she knew she wanted to help other women going through the natural process. Halle Berry continues to recall playing the “Blame Game” with her boyfriend, Van Hunt, after her doctor misdiagnosed her with a “really bad case of herpes.” Berry shares:
“Because when I was 54 years old, I had just met Van. I manifested this man. We were having the best time. I finally met my person. It was amazing. Then, one morning, I tried to go to the bathroom and I couldn’t go. It was so painful when I tried to let a little bit out. I couldn’t go. I had to squeeze it out. It took me almost 10 minutes to just empty my bladder because it was so painful.
Substances were down there that I had never seen before and I thought, ‘What is this?’ So, I go right to the doctor and he’s doing the exam, looking up. He said, ‘Yep. Uh-huh. I think I know what this is.’ And I’m like, ‘What?!’ He said, ‘It’s a really bad case of herpes.’”
Halle Berry Recalls Playing ‘Blame Game’ With Boyfriend Van Hunt After Herpes Misdiagnosis
Halle Berry continues to reveal that her boyfriend Van Hunt had to drive her to the doctor because she was so swollen that she couldn’t even close her legs to get behind the wheel. She says:
“We spent the next 72 hours, kind of doing the ‘Blame Game,’ trying to figure out who gave it to me, who gave it to him. Then, a couple of hours after that, my doctor called me and said, ‘You do not have herpes.’ I’m like, ‘Okay. Then, what is it?!’ This was the defining moment for me. He said, ‘I don’t know. That’s what it looked like.’
And that sent me on my own reconnaissance, on my own researching. That’s when I came u with dry vagina syndrome that women have when they’re in perimenopause. I had all the symptoms of what that felt like. I realized, ‘Oh. I’m 54 years old.’ I learned that perimenopause can start in your late 30s even, and early 40s.”
Berry previously shared this revelation in March 2024 in a candid conversation with former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. At Propper Daley’s fourth “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit, Berry recounted how her misdiagnosis led to her advocating for perimenopausal women and menopause awareness to empower women to embrace this natural phase of life.
Halle Berry Slams Critics Claiming She ‘Can’t Keep A Man’
Halle Berry also slams critics claiming she doesn’t know how to keep a man. She says, “I’ve heard people say, ‘Something must be wrong with Halle Berry! She can’t keep a man!’ Well, who’s to say I want to keep a man? I don’t want to keep the wrong man! Like, I’m not crazy! Right?!’”
The studio audience immediately reacts with applause. Host Drew Barrymore shakes her and repeatedly says, “No.” Berry continues, “So, when you find that you make a mistake… We all make mistakes. We have a right to say, ‘Oh, God. This was a mistake. Let me start again.’ We have a right to do that.”
