As we previously shared, on Friday (March 7), Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse reported that police arrested one suspect in the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Officials identified him as Wylie native Caleb McCray, a 23-year-old recent Southern University graduate.

Police said McCray and two other men, while wearing boxing gloves, punched the Southern University fraternity pledge member in the chest several times before he collapsed, had a seizure, and died. Police charged McCray with felony criminal hazing and manslaughter.

Investigators said McCray was only the first arrest in connection with the death of the 20-year-old Southern University student following the off-campus hazing ritual involving the campus’ Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The incident occurred at a warehouse in late February.

Police say Wilson and eight other pledges arrived at a warehouse and changed into gray sweatpants. They then stood in a line “and were each punched four times with boxing gloves by at least three individuals.” McCray was one of the fraternity members.

A police report says Wilson “appeared to suffer a seizure and lose control of his bodily function.” Police added that “Wilson’s clothing was changed prior to his arrival at the hospital,” where he later died. Initially, the fraternity told police that Wilson collapsed while playing basketball at the park. They dropped him off at an emergency room and then fled before police officers arrived.
