Bishop T.D. Jakes Opens Up About the Scary Moment That Nearly Took His Life
Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a serious medical emergency onstage back in November 2024, but until now, he kept quiet about what really went down. After months of healing and reflection, the spiritual giant is finally sharing the truth behind the terrifying moment—and it was way deeper than anybody imagined.
As previously reported, the 67-year-old bishop was in the middle of delivering an inspirational word during his Nov. 23, 2024 service in Dallas when things took a wild turn. He paused mid-message, looked visibly disoriented, and suddenly had church members rushing to help him as confusion spread through the sanctuary.

Fast forward to now, Jakes gave an emotional sit-down on TODAY, where he dropped the bombshell—he suffered a massive heart attack.
“I didn’t really realize what was happening to me onstage until I got to the hospital in an ambulance and fussing that it happened onstage, by the way, because I didn’t want it to happen, and the doctor leaned over my ear and said, ‘You had a massive heart attack,’” Jakes told Craig Melvin on TODAY on March 26.
What’s really wild? Jakes had no clue. No chest pain. No numbness. No signs. No warning.
“The reason I didn’t realize it was because I had none of the symptoms that they say,” Jakes shared. “No numbness, no sharp pain, no anything. I just kind of drifted off to sleep. I didn’t know what it was, but I almost died.”
Then he hit us with the moment that’ll chill you to your core:
“(The doctor) said five minutes later, I’d have been dead on arrival. The right side of my heart had completely stopped getting blood at all.”
“I Was on My Way Out”: Jakes Breaks Down What He Saw on the Other Side
If you’ve seen the now-viral video, you already know the moment was scary. But hearing Jakes describe it? Whew.
“It’s hard for me to look at that video,” he admitted. “They had to claw the microphone out of my hand. But in my mind, I was in a quiet, peaceful, serene, white-enveloped, cloud-enveloped space.”
He continued,
“I was on my way out. Afterwards in retrospect, it was such a privilege to stand on the other side, to get a little glimpse of what it might be like, or at least what it was like in that moment for me. I think it was absolutely amazing.”
Those words hit different. This wasn’t just a near-death experience—it was spiritual, soulful, and sacred. A full-circle moment for a man who’s spent his life teaching others how to find God through pain, power, and purpose.

From Crisis to Calling: Jakes Is Still Preaching, Still Pushing
Even after going through something that would’ve taken most people out, Jakes ain’t slowing down. The man is back in the pulpit, back recording his podcast, and still dropping gems like only he can. It’s like the scare didn’t weaken him—it woke something up in him.
The way he broke it down on national TV? That was for us. For the people who needed a reminder that even the strongest among us can get knocked down—and still come back swinging.
Clearly Jakes ain’t here to play church. He’s living proof that purpose don’t stop just ‘cause life throws you a curveball. Instead, you rise. You speak. You testify. You keep going.
