Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is back in headlines after he seemingly responded to reports that the NBA is investigating his latest on-court gun gesture. This comes just months after Morant’s previous suspensions for similar incidents involving firearms.
Reports came out on Wednesday that the NBA is launching an investigation into Ja Morant after he seemingly threw a finger gun gesture at Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors during the final moments of the Memphis Grizzlies’ loss on Tuesday night. But Morant isn’t stressing over it.
Just a few hours after the news dropped, Morant took to his X account to brush it off with a lighthearted tweet. “ja this .. ja that,” the Grizzlies point guard wrote on Wednesday, adding a laughing emoji for good measure.
History Repeating? Ja Morant’s Pattern With Gun-Related Controversies
This isn’t Ja Morant’s first rodeo with the NBA’s disciplinary board.
Back in March 2023, he was suspended for eight games without pay after flashing what appeared to be a gun on Instagram Live while partying at a Denver club. Not even two months later, he was suspended again — this time for 25 games — after another video surfaced, showing him holding a firearm while riding in a friend’s car.
At the time, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the situation head-on. “Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless, and potentially very dangerous,” Silver said. “Especially given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him.”
Despite those back-to-back suspensions, Ja was allowed back onto the court after serving his time and completing counseling and training. The league said he was expected to make better decisions going forward.
But now, here we are again. This new incident could force the league to re-evaluate how much more leniency they’re willing to extend. If the NBA determines that this gesture was indeed gun-related, Morant could be facing yet another suspension — and this time, the consequences might be heavier.
