“The Race” rapper Tay-K (or Tay-K 47), who is currently serving a 55-year sentence for a 2016 murder, has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for a 2017 murder.
24-year-old Tay-K, born Taymor McIntyre, is best known for his 2017 single “The Race,” which appeared on Billboard’s Hot 100. The song was released the same day that the then-17-year-old rapper was arrested by U.S. Marshals in New Jersey in connection with a 2016 murder case.
After cutting off his ankle bracelet, fleeing house arrest, and going on the run ahead of a court hearing, he was taken into custody for his part in a botched 2016 home invasion. The rapper, who was 16 at the time of the murder, was accused of killing 21-year-old Ethan Walker in Tarrant County, Texas.
Rapper Tay-K Sentenced To 55 Years In Botched 2016 Home Invasion Resulting In Murder
In 2019, the rapper was sentenced to 55 years in prison. One of his lawyers, Jeff Kearney, claimed, “It wasn’t part of the plan. The plan was robbery. Not killing.” The judge in that case also ruled that he would concurrently serve a 30-year prison sentence for the first three counts of aggravated robbery and 13 years each for the remaining two counts from the same robbery.
While on the run for his 2016 case, Tay-K was accused of a second murder in 2017. Authorities in Bexar County, Texas issued an arrest warrant, alleging that the rapper was part of a group who picked up 23-year-old photographer Mark Anthony Saldívar in San Antonio for a photoshoot that was supposed to happen at a nearby mall.
However, prosecutors alleged that while in the car, Saldívar was robbed at gunpoint for his camera equipment. They also alleged that he was fatally shot after an altercation with Tay-K, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Saldívar was found dead in the parking lot of a Chick-fil-A restaurant on April 23, 2017.
Rapper Tay-K Convicted Of Murder For Second Time, Sentenced To 80 Years In Addition To Current 55-Year Sentence
On Monday (April 14), after eight hours of deliberations, a jury found Tay-K guilty of murder. However, they did not convict him of capital murder. The charge would have carried a mandatory life sentence, without parole. It’s reported that none of the witnesses in the case could identify Tay-K as the shooter in the case. This likely led to the lesser murder charge conviction.
On Tuesday (April 15), 24-year-old Tay-K was handed down an 80-year prison sentence for the killing of the young San Antonio man in 2017. The sentencing arrived hours after testimony from the victim’s family and Tay-K’s family, including his sister Kayla Beverly, who recalled their alleged abusive childhood.
She said she and her younger brother were pulled from their home because of their drug addict mother. They were then placed into the foster system. However, Beverly claimed they were also abused by their foster mother, both physically and mentally.
While speaking to Tay-K, 187th District Court Judge Stephanie Boyd addressed his 55-year sentence and his rough childhood. Boyd said:
“I do realize that while this is a lot of time, you’re still alive. You can still better yourself. But the complainant in this case is deceased, and you need to internalize that the complainant in this case is deceased. You’re going to have to make changes.
From what I can tell, his mother wasn’t a good parent to him. His father wasn’t a good parent to him. Child Protective Services was not good, and if you believe the testimony, I don’t know why Child Protective Services would place children back with a father who put the children’s mother in a hospital.”
