The move arrives after Trump and El Salvador President Nayib Bukele refused to return Abrego Garcia to America.

As we previously shared, on March 12, 29-year-old Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was pulled over in an IKEA parking lot and arrested. Abrego Garcia had his 5-year-old son in the car with him as well. In court documents, Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, said their son misses his father badly.

She said, “He shows me how much he missed Kilmar. He has been finding Kilmar’s work shirts and smelling them, to smell Kilmar’s familiar scent.” Vasquez Sura identified her husband in a photo of detainees entering intake at CECOT, El Salvador’s notorious mega-prison.

According to CNN, in 2019, an immigration judge granted Abrego Garcia protection against deportation back to El Salvador. Around 2011, Abrego Garcia entered the U.S. illegally from El Salvador. His attorneys said over a decade ago he fled his homeland due to gang violence.

Despite a previous immigration judge ordering Abrego Garcia’s protection from deportation, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), under Donald Trump, sent the Maryland father back to his native El Salvador on March 15.

On March 31, Donald Trump’s administration finally acknowledged their mistake, calling the incident an “oversight” and “administrative error.” White House officials further argued against bringing him back. They alleged he has ties to the MS-13 gang, which Trump considers a terrorist organization. The White House said it needed proof that he isn’t a terrorist to request him back. But even then, officials continued to claim they had no power to have El Salvador’s government return him.

On April 4, a Barack Obama-appointed federal judge ruled that Donald Trump’s administration must return the Maryland father they mistakenly deported to El Salvador. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, of Maryland, said, “This was an illegal act,” and ordered the U.S. to return the father by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 7.  However, hours before the deadline, Trump had the Supreme Court issue an “administrative stay,” or temporary pause. On April 10, the Supreme Court ended up upholding Judge Paula Xinis’ order requiring Donald Trump’s administration to return Abrego Garcia.

On April 14, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele met with Donald Trump and his administration in the White House and spoke about Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. At this time, he claims he does not have the power to return the Maryland father, dubbed a terrorist, to the United States. Together, Trump, Bukele, plus Vice President JD Vance, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, all explained why they refused to bring home Abrego Garcia.

On Thursday (April 17), Maryland Senator (D) Chris Van Hollen posted a photo on X and revealed that he secured a meeting with Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. Van Hollen said he flew to El Salvador on Wednesday and sat down with Abrego Garcia.

A source close to the family told ABC News that Abgreo Garcia’s wife was told that the meeting was set up by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. However, she was not allowed to speak to her husband, and was not told where he is being held.

In a statement from Vasquez Sura provided by CASA, an immigration advocacy group that is representing the family, she said her prayers have been answered. She said:

“My children and my prayers have been answered. The efforts of my family and community in fighting for justice are being heard, because I now know that my husband is alive. God is listening, and the community is standing strong. We still have so many questions, hopes, and fears. I will continue praying and fighting for Kilmar’s return home.”
