Shanteari Young Released After Serving Four-Year Sentence for Shooting Ex-Husband Accused of Molesting Children

After serving nearly four years behind bars, Shanteari Young, the Baltimore County daycare owner who took justice into her own hands, has officially been released from prison and moved to a halfway house.
Back in 2022, Young confronted her then-husband, James Weems, a former Baltimore City police officer, after learning he was allegedly sexually abusing children at her daycare, Lil Kidz Kastle in Owings Mills. That confrontation led to a shooting — and eventually, her arrest.
Young’s sentence? Four years — double what prosecutors initially pushed for. That sentencing sparked outrage across social media and the Black community, with many saying the judge went way too hard on a woman who did what the system failed to do: protect the babies.

Now, speaking exclusively from the halfway house in Baltimore, Young is focused on healing and rebuilding. She told WJZ:
“One of the things I really want to say is I thank everybody for the support that they have given me,” Young said. “It has really helped me get through my prison sentence, and I’m just really thankful for that. I’m glad to be out and at the halfway house, and I’m just looking forward to rebuilding and giving back to the community like I was before.”
The Confrontation That Changed Everything: Why Shanteari Young Took Action

She was staying in a hotel while on a business trip with him when she finally snapped. No kids were harmed in the shooting, but it was clear — this was a woman pushed beyond her limits.
She later filed for divorce, changed her last name, and fully cooperated with authorities, eventually testifying against Weems.
In her words:
“The one thing I think that we need to know is that sexual abuse is not OK with children,” Young said. “A lot of times in the past, it has been covered up, and it’s good that it’s getting some type of notoriety to it so that we can stop it.”
She continued:
“We can help children and not accept this, especially from somebody who we all thought should have been protecting children and protecting the community at one point.”
James Weems Convicted: Life Sentence Handed Down in 2024
While Shanteari was behind bars, her ex-husband faced his own judgment day. In 2024, Weems was convicted of raping and sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl at the Lil Kidz Kastle daycare. He is now serving a life sentence in prison.
