While clapping back at United States President-elect Donald Trump, who claimed he would rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo sarcastically suggests the U.S. should be renamed “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America.”

As we previously shared, one day after Congress certified his election victory, United States President-elect Donald Trump said, during a news conference on Tuesday (January 7), that he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” While standing at the podium to discuss a wide range of topics, Trump took aim at Mexico and said that the U.S. has been “doing most of the work” in the Gulf of Mexico, adding that “it’s ours” and should be renamed.
He said, “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.” However, Trump failed to note that the Gulf of Mexico had already been named as such since before the United States was founded. It’s also reported that Trump can theoretically rename the area, but other countries don’t have to follow suit.
During the same press conference, Trump said that Mexico “has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.” Previously, he has notably threatened to raise tariffs on imports into the country.

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Gulf of Mexico is a body of water covering approximately 600,000 square miles. It is bordered by several southern U.S. states to the north and bordered by Mexico to the south. The body of water is connected to the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Following United States President-elect Donald Trump suggesting he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, whom Mexican voters elected to be their first woman president in June 2024, sarcastically clapped back and offered to rename the U.S., “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America,” referring to a founding document from 1814 that shows Mexico’s constitution referring to North America as such, according to The Associated Press.
On Wednesday (January 8), Mexico’s President held her daily news conference, where, this time, she stood in front of a map from 1607, that labeled most of North America as “América Mexicana (Mexican America),” and dryly responded to Donald Trump’s Gulf of Mexico/Gulf of Mexico commentary. The Mexican President gestured to the map and smiled before sarcastically offering, “Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds pretty, no? Isn’t it true?”

According to The New York Times, Mexico’s President also responded to Donald Trump’s claim that Mexico is “essentially run by the cartels.” When asked about his comment, she said, “With all due respect, in Mexico, the people rule.” She emphasized that Mexico will continue to defend its status “as a free, independent, and sovereign country,” and that it will continue to collaborate with the United States and understand each other.
The Mexican President also noted that the country is “very interested in stopping the entry of U.S. firearms into Mexico,” further noting that approximately 75% of guns seized in Mexico were smuggled from across the U.S. border.
