As President Donald Trump continues to fulfill his promise of mass deporting illegal immigrants living in America, he’s also been floating around the idea and considering firing nearly 90,000 IRS (Internal Revenue Service) agents and reassigning them to become Border Patrol agents.

During an unscheduled rally at Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday evening (January 25), President Donald Trump talked through an idea that looked to move nearly 90,000 IRS agents he believed to be recently hired under former President Joe Biden‘s administration and reassign them to Border Patrol.
In 2022, Biden had approved the Democratic Party’s plans to give the IRS $80 billion in funding and hire about 88,000 IRS agents over a 10-year period as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, a move that was expected to increase tax revenues in the United States.
Combatting Biden’s plans, Trump vowed to the crowd in Vegas that he would get them “no tax on tips,” and also suggested ending income tax across the board, claiming his plans on tariffs could fill the financial voids. He said, “How about just no tax?” Chuckling, he added, “You could do that. You know? If the tariffs work out like I think, a thing like that could happen, if you want to know the truth.”
While talking about taxes, Trump made his comment about firing nearly 90,000 IRS agents and reassigning them to Border Patrol. He said, “On day one, I immediately halted the hiring of any new IRS agents. They hired, or tried to hire, 88,000 new workers to go after you. And we’re in the process of developing a plan to either terminate all of them or maybe we’ll move them to the border.”
He continued, “I think we’re going to move them to the border, where they’re allowed to carry guns. You know, they’re so strong on guns. But, these people are allowed to carry guns, so we’ll probably move them to the border.” According to IRS Code, 26 U.S. Code § 7608, certain special IRS agents are permitted to carry firearms as part of their duties.

As he mentioned, before President Donald Trump’s loose idea about firing nearly 90,000 IRS agents and reassigning them to Border Patrol, he had already signed an executive order for a 90-day hiring freeze for federal civilian employees during his first days in office, with the exception of jobs linked to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety.
According to the order, after 90 days, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), in consultation with the Director of OPM and the Administrator of the United States DOGE Service (USDS), “shall submit a plan to reduce the size of the Federal Government’s workforce through efficiency improvements and attrition.”
