On Saturday (February 1), President Donald Trump followed through with his threats to impose steep and stiff tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, thus sparking a trade war with the United States’ largest trading partners, and leaving American businesses and consumers at risk for increased prices.

According to NBC News, President Donald Trump slapped Canada and Mexico with tariffs of 25% on all goods, plus a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and oil exports, and he placed a 10% tariff on goods from China. The new levies for Canada are set to go into effect just after midnight on Tuesday (February 4). However, it is unclear when the tariffs on Mexico and China will be enforced.

Taking to his account on Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “Today, I have implemented a 25% Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10% additional Tariff on China. This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl.”

He added, “We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it.”

Immediately responding to President Trump’s tariffs threats, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fired back and vowed to push back against the new policies, as well as impose 25% tariffs on imports amounting to $155 billion, including alcohol and fruit. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Trudeau said, “No one – on either side of the border – wants to see American tariffs on Canadian goods. I met with our Canada-U.S. Council today. We’re working hard to prevent these tariffs, but if the United States moves ahead, Canada’s ready with a forceful and immediate response.”

In a second post, he wrote, “The United States has confirmed that it intends to impose 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods, with 10% tariffs on energy, starting February 4. I’ve met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today, and I’ll be speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico shortly. We did not want this, but Canada is prepared. I’ll be addressing Canadians later this evening.” Later that evening, he did speak out, warning Americans that prices for goods were about to rise as Canada would not be backing down from President Trump’s threats.

Additionally, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who previously warned of potential tariff retaliation against Trump in November 2024, fired back at President Donald Trump’s tariffs order and in part wrote in a post on X, “I instruct the Secretary of Economy to implement Plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests.”
