The NBA and the rest of social media were left stunned overnight as the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz agreed to one of the biggest blockbuster trades in league history. Late Saturday (February 1), ESPN reported that the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.

Commenting on the stunning news, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania said, “This deal materialized in the shadows. This came out of nowhere. This is maybe the most stunning trade, definitely that I’ve been a part of, in recent NBA history. As far as it was never clearly out there.”

Charania further claimed, “I’m told Luka Doncic, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, the players, the coaches, a lot of people on both sides with the Mavericks and Lakers had no idea. I can assuredly tell you LeBron James had no idea this was coming. Anthony Davis had no idea this was coming. I’m told Luka Doncic is still stunned about this trade.”

Charania said 25-year-old “mega-star” Doncic has been deemed as “untouchable” and as “the guy that’s never gonna be traded.” However, he said he was told that the Mavericks approached the Lakers and offered Doncic a few days ago in the trade. He said, “The Mavericks went out and knew exactly who they wanted. They wanted Anthony Davis. That’s the player that if they were ever going to trade Luka Doncic, it was for A.D. The Lakers had to huddle internally. They’ve never offered Anthony Davis ever in a trade.”

Following the reports of the Los Angeles Lakers trading Anthony Davis for Dallas Mavericks player Luka Doncic, social media went into an uproar with split reactions, however, most people were shocked, including LeBron James. NBA Insider Bill Reiter also addressed the Luka Doncic trade reports with CBS Sports’ Joe Musso and alleged, “LeBron James had grown frustrated with Anthony Davis.”

Reiter said, “I have not been able to reach every source you would like to with this breaking news story. So, Joe, I’m going to tell you something that was true a year ago. But, I think it is pertinent now and I think I talked to you about this last year. At the trade deadline, the Lakers fans got very angry. But, at the time, there was talk within the Lakers organization that LeBron James had grown a little frustrated with Anthony Davis.”

Reiter continued, “It wasn’t necessarily that A.D. was going to be traded. We obviously didn’t report that on CBS Sports. It was just something to keep an eye on. LeBron is frustrated with A.D. and he doesn’t think that it’s working, and that’s because LeBron has very, very high expectations. And you fast forward a year later, obviously, that reporting, really that information from Lakers sources, was accurate.”

Reiter added, “This was probably a slow boil, Joe, and it’s always hard to know with LeBron James. I’ve covered the guy. We’ve all watched him for years. He’s an amazing player, but he can be… a little inconsistent sometimes. He can be, some would say, a little moody. So, this is something that I’d heard about and we had talked about a year ago and so, you never know if it’s just LeBron having a bad month with A.D. But, obviously, LeBron had made the consideration.”

LeBron James called cap on Bill Reiter’s claims about him “growing frustrated with Anthony Davis” and causing the Los Angeles and Dallas Mavericks to trade for Luka Doncic. He took to X replying to CBS Sports’ report and said, “You a fkn lie!!! 🤥🤡.”
