According to Polygon, the Georgia-based collectibles company initially found the Charizard-shaped Cheeto between 2018 and 2022. It remained locked away in a safe until February 10, when it was listed for auction with an initial price of $250. The final bid skyrocketed to nearly $88,000.
How the Charizard-Shaped Cheeto Became a Collectible
According to 1st and Goal Collectibles, unlike many high-priced collectibles, this Cheeto wasn’t altered to resemble Charizard. The snack’s natural formation sparked interest, and once it went viral on social media, the hype exploded.
A Pokémon-Inspired Presentation
To ensure the Cheeto’s preservation, the company displayed it inside a custom Pokémon card-inspired nameplate. This unique packaging choice further boosted its appeal, making it not just a snack, but a true collector’s item.
Cheetos and the High-Value Collectibles Market
This isn’t the first time a uniquely shaped Cheeto has sold for an outrageous price. The highest-selling Cheeto ever was a gorilla-shaped chip resembling Harambe, which sold in 2017 for $99,000. However, the buyer declined to make the massive purchase.
The trend of unusual snack collectibles is growing, with fans willing to pay massive amounts for one-of-a-kind novelty items that spark nostalgia or humor.
