A suspected 30-year-old man from Vancouver, Canada has been taken into custody after he allegedly plowed his car into crowds of people at the city’s Filipino Festival Lapu Lapu, leaving at least nine dead and multiple others injured.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, at least nine people were killed when the driver plowed into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day block part shortly after 8 p.m. The exact number of injured was not immediately known. Police wrote on social media:
“Vancouver Police investigates mass casualty incident at neighbourhood block party A suspect has been arrested by Vancouver Police after several people were killed and multiple others injured at a neighbourhood street party in South Vancouver earlier tonight.”
Police the said the suspect is a 30-year-old man from Vancouver. Officers arrested him at the scene. No further details about the suspect or a motive were immediately released.
“At approximately 8:14 p.m. on April 26, a man drove into a large crowd of people attending the Lapu Lapu Day Festival near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street. A 30-year-old suspect, a Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and is being led the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section.”

In another tweet, the Vancouver Police added:
“A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight. The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.”

In a post on social media early Sunday (April 27), police said, “At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism.” Vancouver Police then updated that at least nine people died in the tragedy, writing:
“UPDATE: As of now, we can confirm nine people have died after a man drove through a crowd at last night’s Lapu Lapu Festival. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.”
The Lapu Lapu festival was being held in a South Vancouver neighborhood. Several videos posted on social media showed victims and the debris in the aftermath thrown across a long stretch of road. At least seven people were seen lying immobile on the ground. Videos also showed a black SUV with the front of the car mangled. Story developing…
