The father, identified as Levi Chapman, says the school has refused to meet with him and hasn’t notified other parents in the district. Since the commotion, KSTP-TV (5 EYEWITNESS NEWS), Minneapolis’ ABC affiliate, reports that the suspected teacher has since been put on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Chapman said that two weeks ago, his son forgot his laptop at home. Rectifying the situation, the teacher at Las Estrellas Elementary lent his personal iPad. Chapman recalled:

“Him and another student were sitting there, and they closed out a tab. Well, that tab that had popped up to them. My son described it as ‘a bunch of naked men lying on top of each other… The teacher came over to see what was happening, and my son said that he got angry with him and said, you know, ‘You’re violating my personal privacy’ and took the iPad from him.”

Eventually, the teacher gave the child a loaner laptop. But the damage was done. Referring to his son, Chapman said, “It made him very uncomfortable.”

On Wednesday morning (May 14), KSTP-TV contacted the Minneapolis Public School district around 11 a.m. After failing to get answers, a few hours later, the news outlet follows up with a phone call. At 2 p.m., another follow-up went out via email. In it, the station requested answers on how this incident happened and what actions were being taken to avoid a reoccurrence in the future.

KSTP-TV reported that around 3:30 p.m., they received a statement that read:

“Minneapolis Public Schools take allegations like these seriously and will follow any relevant district protocols. These allegations are currently under investigation, and due to data privacy laws, we are unable to disclose specific details relating to this incident.”

Chapman said he too has finally made contact with the district. He said, “Since I’ve been in touch with the school. I’ve received emails, and we’ve gone over a care plan. They said that my son, if he needs to use his cell phone then to call, then he can get a hold of us.”

Since the incident, his son has been moved to a different classroom. However, the Minnesota father laments, “I wish that the teacher would have gave him that loaner laptop in the beginning,” instead of the iPad. Chapman also said that as of Wednesday, he’s been in contact with the Department of Education. Officials told him that they are doing screenings to determine if the inappropriate incident falls under state child maltreatment laws to pursue an investigation at their level.
