And just like that…Billionaire Elon Musk is leaving the Donald Trump administration after serving under DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) and being tasked with slashing the size of the federal government.
On Wednesday (May 28), Elon Musk took to his platform X and tweeted:
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Elon Musk Worked In White House Under DOGE As ‘Special Government Employee,’ Allowing Him A Government Job For 130 Days
This year, the government agency was launched under Donald Trump’s second term as president. He quickly appointed Elon Musk to head the newly-created department. Initially, he named Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
Musk was designated as a “special government employee.” The titled allowed him to work a government job for 130 days each year. With Trump’s incubation on January 20, Musk’s limits for his term expected him to exit by the end of May. A White House official told news outlet Semafor that Musk’s “off-boarding” as a special government employee would begin on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Musk’s time in the White House has been met with mixed reviews. His role has even cost him tons in profit as an entrepreneur. In April, it was reported that Tesla sales plummeted 13% in the first quarter of 2025. The drop marked the largest decline ever amid ongoing Elon Musk backlash and global “Tesla Takedown” protests.
Elsewhere, Musk — the world’s richest person who is CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI — said during a Tesla earnings call in April that his time spent running DOGE would significantly drop by the end of May. He also said he’d continue spending a “day or two per week” on government work until Trump’s out of office. Musk also said he had plans to keep his small office at the White House.
