According to The Washington Post, President Joe Biden regrets dropping out of the 2024 presidential race — making way for Vice President Kamala Harris to run as Democratic nominee — as he believes he could have beaten Republican nominee and President-elect Donald Trump.
While being careful not to necessarily blame his Vice President pick Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden reportedly insists that he could have won re-election had he not dropped out of the 2024 presidential election race, handing the reins to Harris and allowing Donald Trump to win.
On Saturday (December 28), The Washington Post reported that Joe Biden still regrets dropping out of the presidential race in July after facing mounting pressure from Democrats, telling him to step aside and allow way for VP Kamala Harris to run in his place against President-elect Donald Trump.
Reportedly, Biden and some of his aides privately boasted to others “in recent days” that he still believes he should have stayed in the race and could have beaten Trump in the November election, despite his controversial debate performance on June 27 and low approval numbers that ultimately led to him leaving the race and nominating VP Kamala Harris.
In addition to his poor debate performance and low approval numbers, Biden also faced a decrease in funding over the summer as donors began to doubt he’d actually beat Trump and secure a re-election, following his debate performance.
Speaking of his debate against Donald Trump, Joe Biden reportedly acknowledged that he had “screwed up” as he struggled to piece together sentences and defend his policies. Critics called him out over his incoherent answers and for stumbling over his words. However, insiders told The Washington Post that Biden does not regret participating in the debate, just his performance.
As mentioned, the outlet reported that Joe Biden made sure to avoid pointing the finger at VP Kamala Harris, who was defeated by Donald Trump. The outlet said, “Aides say the president has been careful not to place blame on Harris or her campaign.” Additionally, many Democrats reportedly blame Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump on Joe Biden insisting that he not drop out of the 2024 presidential race sooner.
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) told The Washington Post, “Biden ran on the promise that he was going to be a transitional president, and in effect, have one term before handing it off to another generation. I think his running again broke that concept — the conceptual underpinning of the theory that he would end the Trump appeal; he would defeat Trumpism and enable a new era.”
